Or an alternate "not destroying records according to schedule"...

Destroying physical copies of records, but retaining electronic copies longer, or worse yet, NOT APPLYING the schedule to electronic records at all.

During an audit, the inconsistent application of a retention schedule to records selected for review raises questions about how compliant the organization is with the schedule across the board, and frequently results in a broader selection of records being reviewed.

The last thing you want is to "open the door" for an auditor (internal or especially external) to have the option to increase the scope of the audit.

Having a retention schedule and not following it can sometimes be seen as worse than not having one at all- it can be viewed as the difference between not KNOWING what to do and not CARING about doing what you're supposed to.
