Great question...so many answers....
My spin is mistakes are inevitable. Whether intentional or not mistakes will be made. We are human and it is in our nature to make mistakes. One can argue the mistake is not making the mistake!
There are plenty of motivational posters and quotes that reference it is not the destination it is the journey, champions pick themselves up after falling, etc. I follow the question posed with a question and say, "What mistake have you made lately, did you own it, and did you learn from it?"
Strive for excellence makes sense over striving for perfection. Who defines excellence...simple answer is more than just you.
Last, for those conducting performance appraisals, I find it's important to not only improve a weakness but also improve your greatest strength.
