I agree, but with a caveat.
I think that when you walk into a room with leadership as the "Records Manager" they have you pegged in that niche. When you try to start talking about managing information they look at you like you are an alien as they feel that it is out of the scope of your position.
I feel that the Records Manager role is on the decline, mostly due to the stigma that you refer to. Information Manager is the next step, and it is evolve or die.
As Information Managers though, we need to wear more hats. There needs to be a focus on the privacy aspect of information as well as information security. These have really always been a part of RM, but many in leadership do not think of that when it translates to an electronic world. Instead, organizations go out and hire Information Security specialists and Privacy Officers that lessen the value that Information Managers can provide to an organization and creates a matrix approach to managing information. If we are to transition to "Information Management" we need to be able to speak to all aspects of information as a profession.
