David Gaynon asked "Does anyone know if something similar occurs in Canada, the UK, Australia or New Zealand? How are the records of their prime ministers handled after they leave office?"

The National Archives of Australia collects the records of former Prime Ministers (as well as those of some Ministers, agency heads and High Court Justices). This includes their official records and some of their 'personal' records. There is information on this available at http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/fact-sheets/fs70.aspx.

For some, more recent, Prime Ministers, the Archives has entered into arrangements with other bodies to allow them to have custody of a portion of the records. This is done at the request of the former Prime Minister. The most recent example of this is the loan of some of John Howard's records to the University of New South Wales in March - http://www.naa.gov.au/about-us/media/media-releases/2014/16.aspx.

Some of the records are also available online at http://primeministers.naa.gov.au/.

Hope this answers your question.

DISCLAIMER: I do work for the National Archives of Australia, but do not deal with these records in any way.

John
