Joseph Morris has asked: “There is no differentiation for type of document, discipline, or media, hence digital and paper files bear the same retention. Is anyone of the opinion regarding (or have direct experience with) changing a retention policy to extend the retention of electronic records and not paper files?”
Barbara Wyton wrote: “Joseph, why would you want to do that? It goes against every records management principle that I know. It's the "content not the media" that you are trying to management.“
Dear colleagues,
The retention is based on value – that is the basic records management principle, and not the idea of the same retention irrespective of media! If media has an impact on value, it should be taken into account. Sometimes e-records are of much higher value to organization than their paper counterparts, - especially when huge volumes of records are collected together and coupled with efficient search mechanisms.
With my best regards,
Natasha
