The question was not about history, the question was the premise of retaining all records permanently.  

History should be preserved in the archives, by archivists who are in the best position to determine which is likely be the most valued items for future generations. 

The whole concept of keeping everything forever is ludicrous.  Answer this, what percentage of the federal budget would be used for the National Archives if our founding fathers had determined that every record/document from July 4, 1776 to present had to be retained, cataloged, managed and made available to the public.  

Take it one step farther, how would you ever find what you are looking for?
