The Kessler archives are emblematic of a problem dogging our architectural
heritage. As archivist Tawny Ryan Nelb put it, many architects and firms
are too busy seeking the next job to worry about saving past records. And
often when a firm goes out of business — as the longtime firm founded by
the late Minoru Yamasaki closed a few years ago — their records often wind
up in the Dumpster.

In fact, it was only a last-minute rescue operation mounted by Michigan
State Archivist Mark Harvey that in 2010 saved many of the Yamasaki records
from the trash. Those records are now preserved in Lansing.
