Montana health department computer containing personal info hacked

Ron Baldwin, the state’s chief information officer, who oversees the
state’s computer networks, said the breach is the first time anyone has
used the Internet to gain unauthorized access to a state server.

The breach occurred because of a “security vulnerability” in a software
program the state had purchased, he said. Such programs are routinely
“patched” with security updates, but the vulnerability was discovered by
the hackers before a patch occurred, Baldwin said.

*There are 500 million attempts every month to gain unauthorized access *to
the state’s computer network, Baldwin said.
