I've attended my fair share of conferences and webinars, and I'm sure I'm not
alone in the inundation of emails that came in the month prior to CASL going into
action. In the last week I was receiving a few every day.

However, none of those emails were from American organizations - all were
Canadian. I'm not sure to what extent the legislation impacts you in California.
There was a great deal of consternation here, but cooler heads suspect that
there will be at least initial leniency for companies putting in a good faith effort to
comply.

The heart of the legislation is to get explicit permission for email communication
and to allow for simple ending of the relationship at any time. But - to echo so
many others that are much wiser than me - you should get proper legal counsel
(I'm just a lowly records manager).
