Hello,

I've been a member of this listserv for a few months but haven't introduced myself! I am Katie Blank, Electronic Records Manager at the Marquette University Archives and Special Collections. My position is a new one so there are many exiting projects happening. I will probably have many questions for you and here is my first one:

We have acquired materials from a non-profit organization that will be fully dissolved at the end of 2014 and are determining retention periods for certain financial and tax records. My question pertains to the IRS 990 form. According to the IRS (http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p4221pf.pdf), the 990 form needs to be available for only 3 years after filing, but records retention schedules at various repositories state that 990 forms should be kept permanently. Does anyone know why some repositories keep these materials permanently? Also, is there a difference in retention periods for a non-profit that will no longer exist?

Thank you for any help you can provide!
Best,
Katie
