Does anyone know why some repositories keep these materials permanently?

Hi Katie,

Non-profits may opt to keep 990's permanently as they contain annual,
summary information, useful for the history of the organization.

Typically, when organizations say "Permanent" they mean in reality,
essentially, as long as the organization exists. For an organization
comprised of various corporate entities, they may say something like "Life
of the Entity + 6," which means the parent entity will retain those
records of a closed sub-entity for a period they've determined will cover
their legal and fiscal/tax obligations.

We records managers currently categorize four values for records:
operational/administrative, legal, fiscal/tax, and historical. So you can
work with your legal & tax folks to determine how long after the
organization closes they feel the 990's will be needed for legal, fiscal,
and tax obligations. The operational needs for the records will of course
be concluded. But there remains still the historical value to consider.
Why did you acquire the non-profit and what information about it do you
want to retain for the history of your own organization?
