“The city’s legal obligation to preserve historically important documents
is clear,” said a lawyer, Gideon O. Oliver, who filed a lawsuit in State
Supreme Court in Manhattan on Thursday, asking a judge to order the police
to find and turn over to Professor Fernandez the material she had
requested. “If the documents have been destroyed, that’s a tremendous loss
and something New Yorkers deserve to know.”
