Aside from my full time job at the City of Beaverton, I have a second job as a professional cantor & chorister at a Catholic cathedral. I'm only paid to sing, but I enjoy spending extra time on my own helping to organize the music library.

I often help the music director retrieve music and prepare it for distribution to the choir. I am very familiar with the scores because I have been there for almost 15 years. Many times, I can help her remember a piece by the composer or the voicing (a specific combination of voice parts), but sometimes she can only remember the score by singing a few bars of the melody. I believe this melody is a piece of metadata.

I've been wanting to create an electronic inventory for the scores for years, but how can a melody be documented & used as search criteria? I wish SQL databases could understand musical notation.

Hope to see some of y'all at ARMA2014 in San Diego.

Tyrene
