Pitt gets big grant to set up Big Data center
October 9, 2014, David Templeton, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

"The University of Pittsburgh, with partners including Carnegie Mellon
University, the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and Yale University, has
been awarded an $11 million grant over four years to establish a Big Data
to Knowledge Center of Excellence as part of a 12-center network to
develop ?an amazing engine of discovery.?
Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, announced
formation of the 12-center BD2K network today during a telebriefing, with
the goal of finding better ways to store, share and analyze large data
sets to advance research, drug development, genomics, and even healthcare
records. For now, such data sets are situated at separate places involving

largely incompatible computer systems and software.
Dr. Collins provide an example of how the network can be used.
Understanding autism involves larger data sets of genetic information
including variations in DNA, which play a role in the risk, along with a
lot of imaging and functional data. The goal, he said, is ? trying to make

sense of what that data is telling us.?
