One of the first sets of files I microfilmed for Boulder County back in 1986 were court files that contained mental health records. Except in 1869, when the records began (seven years before Colorado became a state) they were called "Lunacy Records." Each file was stapled to a cover page, the documents were legal size of course, but the cover and documents were folded into fourths, with the case metadata printed on one of the fourths, so each packet was slightly over 3.5 inches wide by 8 inches tall. All, of course, were hand written with gorgeous calligraphy.
