Well, in business we would ask how long the cards have operational, legal, or compliance value.  

For Valentine cards, however, I would ask how long the cards have sentimental or artistic value, and whether the retention is important for maintaining a healthy relationship with the sender.

And as to that last qualifier, we revert to our favorite stand-by: it depends.
