VICTORIA — The B.C. government says it will begin replacing its paper
archives with digital documents as it wrestles with a massive backlog of
old records and a lengthy dispute with the provincial museum over the cost
of maintaining historical records.

The government introduced a new bill Thursday that will update 79-year-old
legislation to allow for electronic provincial records, a new digital
archive system and online access for the public to search and review
historical documents.

"The problems of our economy have occurred not as an outgrowth of
laissez-faire, unbridled competition.
They have occurred under the guidance of federal agencies, and under the
umbrella of federal regulations."
Senator Ted Kennedy, in defending trucking deregulation in 1978.
