Hi, Desiree! A word of caution - managing government records is vastly different from managing records in a law firm as the majority of the records belong to clients. The book that Pilar mentions is extremely valuable for gaining insight into basic law firm records management. Keep in mind that the publication date is beginning to show - simply due to the development speed of technology. There are many resources, but it is challenging to find them. Here are a few:

IG SMEs have joined together to produce reference material through a Law Firm Symposium sponsored by Iron Mountain. The documents should be available through the IM website.

Get involved with ILTA (International Legal Technology Association)

Get involved with the Information Governance Initiative

I believe that there are standards already established for metadata through ANSI (should be able to find them through the ARMA bookstore).

I would also suggest that you work with the law firm's general counsel to gain their opinions as they will guide you in how best to develop the records management program that would fit the firm and its culture.

Feel free to reach out to me anytime, too....good luck!

Subject: Managing Law Firm Records

Hello All,

I recently started managing records for a newer law firm that hasn't had much organization within their digital records. To make it a bit harder, I have never archived legal records. From bates numbering to knowing how important saving metadata is, this is a whole new world. I've worked with the federal government's retention schedule (for about 3 years, then took a break for a couple years, and now back at it) but that is about it.

Any readings to point me to?

Thanks for any help.

All the best,
