TL;DR version: In order to learn what a song was, I had to wait several years, move to Austin, hear everyone rave about Friday Night Lights, watch the pilot...and then I was able to search the Internet and find the song. So I guess it wasn't just the Internet that helped me find it, but it was the final, pivotal piece in the puzzle!

TL version: Back in 2005, a friend of mine danced in a college ballet to a piece of music I really liked - an 8 minute instrumental rock song, so there weren't any lyrics I could Google. I asked for the recording from my friend, but she didn't know who the piece was by. So, I just listened to and enjoyed the song, despite the mystery. Then, during the 2010 Olympics, I heard the song in the background during an interview with Shaun White. I scoured the Internet to try to find who the song was by, but no luck. A few years later, after I moved to Austin and my friends kept raving Friday Night Lights, the TV show, I decided to see what all the fuss was about and watch it on Netflix. The song played in the background during the pilot episode. From there, it was pretty easy to go on the Internet and find what music played in that episode.

It was "Your Hand in Mine" by Explosions in the Sky, an Austin band who also wrote a bunch of other music for the show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzIK5FaC38w
