One of the founders of the original Chinatown in Los Angeles got his start in business operating a small general store during the California gold rush. His business almost failed, however, until he found that he could satisfy a previously unmet need for specific items of retail merchandise: crotchless underwear for the region's prostitutes. Once he added these items to the store's inventory, he became one of the very few successful Chinese immigrant businessmen at that time, eventually expanding to dealing in Chinese antiquities and relocating to Los Angeles.
