Wayne,

Haven't used Lync, but have used WebEx, which has a recording feature.
Recording is typically done when used for presentations, but can also be
used for meetings when you want to better document what was discussed for
others who couldn't attend.

Large companies spanning geographic areas often don't have a choice
because face-to-face meetings are not possible unless travel is arranged.

In meetings where substantive issues are discussed or decisions are made,
typically people document the meeting in the form of minutes regardless of
whether it's recorded electronically or by someone taking notes. Just
normal business practice, and well, it's hard to move forward on the issue
discussed if someone hasn't kept notes from the meeting.
