I do not have an argument with the view that Library schools need to change. My knowledge is anecdotal. I have been involved in a teaching position with two schools. My current position is with Emporia State University in Kansas. I have been teaching there since 2008. The only reason I am there is due to their vision.

At the time they interviewed me about the opportunity, they had already realized a need to see beyond what was traditional in that field. They were aware that typical skill sets of their graduates should translate into Information Management. This is why they approached ARMA about a practitioner who could also teach.

It is an honor to work with the students. They have so much passion. The curriculum has seen a lot of change as it was focused on mostly physical management in 2008 and is now 50 percent Information Governance. And a significant percentage of them are honest with me that RM or IG is not what they are looking to do for a career. But there are those who either want to pursue the profession or find through the course that they might be interested. This is the primary reason that ESU sees value in the content of my course. (Too bad ARMA didn't agree with that IG value as they didn't give me credit for continuing ed on my IGP, but I digress.)

There are a number of graduates out there who actively work in our profession. This is entirely due to the vision of the School of Library and Information Science at ESU. I want to ensure that they, and other schools like them, are recognized for seeing the core values of what they teach and how those values go beyond the traditional Library profession.

Go Hornets!
