Full disclosure: still at AIIM. And therefore not engaging the spleen
venting that comprised the original post. Also, speaking solely for myself
as an AIIM professional member since 2001 and an ARMA professional member
since 2001 and not on behalf of AIIM, ARMA, or any other association or
employer former, current, or future.

I can't agree more with Larry's last two paragraphs here. The core
principles for information management are largely the same. The devil's in
the details, and there are lots of devils and details to be sorted, but
retention is retention. Findability is findability. Keeping stuff too long
still increases liability. Etc.

I would extend Larry's final paragraph in two ways. First, anyone with a
solid background in RM and that has remained engaged can provide
significant, but not complete IMO, governance expertise - simply because
many of us haven't had such a broad spectrum of components to need to
understand. Things like data loss prevention, master data management,
ediscovery for those that haven't been involved yet, etc. If you don't have
that background, I think you need to think about getting some of it. There
are a ton of great resources available through the mentioned organizations
as well as many others. Google is your friend here.

Second, while I certainly think that AIIM and ARMA have great resources,
and I'm interested to see what the "new kids on the block" come up with,
it's important to underline that as professionals we ultimately have
responsibility for our own professional growth and development. If you're
not getting what you need, you need to find it somewhere; if you tell us
about it, maybe we can address it and maybe we can't, but at least we know
there's a need.

There have been a number of other posts on this general topic of
associations; I have linked to all of them on my personal blog at
http://informata.blogspot.com. Believe you me that I and other are reading
and closely following the posts and the comments.
