< Sony Corp. is betting it will be stored on optical discs. The Japanese company on Tuesday unveiled a massive, jukebox-like system called Everspan that is designed to store, fetch and read high-capacity discs that are descendants of CDs and DVDs.>

Why is this being announced as new? Does Sony think we have all gone senile and won't remember this technology from the past? This technology (optical disks AND jukebox storage/retrieval) has been around for years. I remember working on standards for optical disks and magneto disks and other kinds of disks years ago. There is nothing wrong with the technology other than it has been considered obsolete for a number of years now (at least in the U.S.) The French have only accepted optical disks for archival storage since at least 1994 (when I first got involved with the ISO standards program). In fact, unless things have changed in the past year, optical disk is the ONLY acceptable storage media for images in France.
