Join the Northern Virginia Chapter of ARMA (ARMA NOVA) for our June 2016
monthly meeting as our topic, “Best Practices in a Transforming World,”
continues. Our speaker for the month is Mark Santangelo, Chief Librarian
and Archivist, George Washington Library, the newest Presidential Library
which is located in Mt. Vernon, Virginia. His topic will be, “Then and Now:
the Conservation of Records at George Washington’s Mount Vernon.”
The National Library, a 45,000-square-foot facility, safeguards Washington’s
books and manuscripts, approximately 1,500 additional 18th-century books, as
well as thousands of important 19th-century newspapers, manuscripts, and
documents. It also serves as a scholarly retreat, creates educational
outreach programs, and provides seminars and training programs with a
special focus on Washington’s leadership. The Library emphasizes
educational outreach, touching the lives of students, teachers, and scholars
across the nation.
Join Mr. Santangelo as he shares his experiences as the library’s first
Chief Librarian and Archivist, responsible for developing the collection,
managing staff, and providing access and services to facilitate and promote
the collection’s use.

OUR SPEAKER
Mark Santangelo,
Chief Librarian and Archivist,
Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington, Mt.
Vernon, Virginia
Mr. Santangelo serves as the Chief Librarian and Archivist for the newest
presidential library, the George Washington Library. The library is located
adjacent to the historical George Washington’s Mount Vernon, and is a
resource for scholars, students, and all those interested in George
Washington, colonial America, and the Revolutionary and founding eras.
Mark leads the library’s collections, staff, and services. He has been
George Washington's Mount Vernon Chief Librarian and Archivist since 2012.
In his role, he is in charge of the building project for the new Washington
Presidential Library, which opened in the Fall 2013. In this role, he is
responsible for developing the collection, managing staff, and providing
access and services to facilitate and promote the collection’s use.
Mark will introduce the audience to this unique collection including a
discussion on the way the library classifies Archives, Special Collections,
and Records Management.
Mark holds a degree in Library Science (MLS) from Rutgers University and a
Maters of Theology (Th.M.) from Princeton University. His previous
positions include twelve years at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as the
Museum Librarian in charge of the Onassis Library and antiquities libraries
as well as five years at the Princeton University Firestone Library serving
in the General Reference and Humanities Department.
