Presentation Summary: What do you mean by "permanent"?
Different viewpoints of permanent records from the archives and RIM perspective
This presentation is designed for records managers who work with archivists
in their institutions, or who perhaps ARE the archivist at their
institutions, as sometimes happens. Any records manager that occasionally
needs to deal with the concept of saving a record for posterity will find
this presentation interesting and useful. The main objectives of the
presentation will be to:

1. Re-open our conception of what it means to be a permanent record;
2. The differences in philosophy, approach, and interpretation of permanency
between archivists and record managers;
3. Common ground the two can find to work together to strengthen record
series and balance the needs of cost savings and risk management with the
preservation of history.

Speaker: Donald Cornelius
Donald Cornelius is a native of Southern New Jersey. He obtained his B.S.
in History from the University of Maryland in 2002, and an MLIS degree from
the University of Southern Mississippi in 2004. He currently works as an
Archivist with the State Archives of NJ. His primary responsibilities
include appraisal, acquisition, and accession of records of permanent
historical value.

For the first six years of his career with the State of NJ, Don worked as an
archivist attached to a team of records managers whose responsibility
included the global review of record storage solutions for amenable state
agencies. The application of appraisal, weeding, proper disposal,
adjustment of retention, and relocation of records brought him a different
perspective on the relationship between archives and records management.
