I know that my company does not allow the use of IM as a business tool, the biggest problem is that no standard exists. there are at least 3 different varieties of IM running loose, AOL, Yahoo and (I think) MSN.

if you are using it for business purposes you then apply retention as you would other document type. It is the content that is important.

the new ANSI/ARMA standard "Managing Electronic Messages as Records" will be available (I believe) in November
