Relating to the question about virtual barcodes - unless I am
misunderstanding the question, the answer is that barcodes are a font.
You can type "barcode fonts" into Google and come up with all sorts of
resources for purchasing bar code fonts. There are font packages
available for desktop systems and for mainframes. The cost for the
desktop systems is minimal and once the fonts are installed, you simply
choose where you want to place the information, type it in, apply the
barcode font and once you print the document, you have the barcode
information available for the scanner to interpret. You can choose most
of the major "flavors", 3 of 9, etc. and there is information on the
Kofax web site to tell you all the different ones they recognize.

The bar codes can be placed anywhere on the document and the amount of
white space needed depends on the resolution at which you are scanning
(at least that has been my experience).
