I have been absent from the list for some time, but am prompted to draw
upon my colleagues knowledge of this topic. I checked the list archives
and did not find any references.

A person from my IS division called to say our newly acquired company
wants to go to unified messaging. Her definition to me of unified
messaging was that it enables access to faxes, voice mail and e-mail
from a single mailbox that users can reach either by telephone or a
computer equipped with speakers. The messages can be forwarded and/or
saved indefinitely. Computer users can select and play voice-mail
recordings that appear in their in-boxes. Telephone users can both
retrieve voice mail and hear text-to-voice translations of e-mail
messages. Messages of any type can be saved, answered, filed, sorted
and forwarded.

Corporate Counsel is of the belief that this could create a legal
nightmare. I am inclined to agree. My company does not retain voice
mail backups, nor do we maintain internal instant messaging backups.
These decisions were reached by consensus of IS, Legal and the records
management function and is documented as policy.

Has anyone had experience with Unified Messaging? I welcome your
responses to the list or to me personally and I thank you in advance.
