Both DM and RM share similarities, in that they both deal with repositories
of information. Records management is important as it provides evidence of
decision making, and deals with regulatory, fiscal and archival functions of
an organization. Both deal with repositories of knowledge and information,
however records management repositories are more secure, structured,
organized and have retention schedules built in to deal with the retention
of archival records over time. Records management also has a different life
cycle then document management. Document management, somewhat like data,
deals with information in its raw form. Once captured, organized,
structured it becomes a record. Document management was first developed to
provide more efficient and easy access to information. Records management
goes much further in that we structure it more, schedule it, archive it etc.
Historically, Document Management Systems are large repositories of
everything, while records repositories only retain what is legally/fiscally
required. I will keep it short. Just a couple of thoughts without being
too long winded. Cheers.
