It depends on your requirements.  JPEG is a lossy format that compresses
files by losing pixels.  TIFF is lossless but makes for very large
files, we have some that are several GB in size.

As an alternative, new compression routines are available.  JPEG 2000
and DjVu are two that you might want to consider.
