Actually in California, according to our local newspaper, this is no
longer true. Government workers had long accepted lower wages for better
benefits and job security. A recent survey has shown that their actual
wages are comparable to private sector wages.

Ginny is correct. There are a number of factors that influence the
salaries paid to RM Staff. The industry, location, and how a particular
company perceives RM. Heavily regulated industries and companies in
larger cities generally pay more, but it is the last factor that is most
influential.

Governments are notorious for paying lower wages for all jobs, not
just RM. I know an IT consultant that wouldn't mind becoming an employee
at a state agency, but the wage rate is too low.

Ah yes.....the periodic discussion on poor pay offerings for records
managers. I agree our field is not always paid what we are worth, but it
is an uphill battle to get things to change. There are much higher
paying RIM jobs on the market but usually for a head of dept., group or
division manager, or sole source of expertise in an organization. As
discussed before on the list, corporate RIM jobs are usually higher
paying than state and local government (and even some Federal) RIM jobs.
Unfortunately, state and local government rarely sees the records
management job series as high paying -- no political clout and does not
fit the old-fashioned view of hierarchy and power play. Getting a job
series changed in government (and it is always based on the series - not
the individual in a particular position) is often complex and time
consuming. From the perspective of other state and local positions, the
32,500 salary for an analyst over time in Jeff City, MO is about right.
