If you have an electronic copy then I believe the paper version can be destroyed. Then the electronic copy will act as the original. I am not sure about legal instruments such as mortgages, deeds etc. which have a stamped seal?
I do know that the issue of the original "signature" is still a hot one around the world. Cheers.
