re Peter's comment... {snip}Are they looking for a records manager who happens to have a
forklift operators license, or are they looking for a forklift
operator who happens to know some records management.

My issue with some of these job descriptions is that you don't see them asking for such requirements for a chartered accountant, a lawyer, a doctor etc. Today's records manager is a "professional" with professional certifications, degrees, etc. and I find it distasteful with all my education and experience to require me to drive a forklift. Now if I was hired to be a forklift driver so be it, that is different or if I was working in a more junior position, in a archival facility where it was part of my job, then that too is different. However, if you are in a senior position, educated and certified (not certifiable) then you this should not be in your job description.

In the past many managers became managers because they climbed the corporate ladder (rose through the ranks so to speak), so they know the business. Part of the issue with today's manager is that they always do not have to be an "expert" in the business, they just have to be a good administrator. I see this all the time where the subject matter expert in RM reports to someone who has little or no experience in our profession. My 2 cents. Cheers.
