Okay, a quick comment or two about web 2.0 ...

I find it intriguing, much in the same way as Weinberger's "Everything Is Miscellaneous". RM is traditionally rooted in structure that is fairly static and is managed by one, or a few. However, web 2.0 concepts turn that on its head. Wikis, for example, are iterative - they are written and re-written/over-written by many (unlike other things, like blogs, that accumulate and are, IMO, more suited to being "managed"). Tags are added, changed, deleted on a constant basis. It feels comfortable that RMs could use metadata/tags for the purpose of classification and hence application of retention periods ... but if those attributes are fleeting, at best, then where do we go?

In an IT and social environment that has transcended, or is at least on its way up, Jesse is right. We must get our hands dirty NOW, or else face inevitable hardship. So many of the battles we fight and convoluted processes we are forced to create are, IMO, due to the fact that we are getting into the game too late.

I don't have the answers, and I can honestly say I am not overly technologically-advanced, however I AM all for not making things harder than they have to be. I just set up a meeting for later this week with my IT Director to get an overview of where we're at internally, and what he sees for us as an organization. I suggest others consider doing the same.

Cheers, it's 5:00pm here in sunny South Carolina!

Julie
