The retention of the source code is going to be dependent on what the 
purpose is of the software in question.  If it is a product available for 
customers to consume, it would need to be maintained through the period 
that support is being offered on that iteration of the software.  If it is 
a wholly in house solution code can be recycled with each iteration that 
is generated.
