How to Manage Unstructured Data

Unlike structured data unstructured data is not usually created, updated,
used, distributed, or stored inside a tightly constructed set of rules in
the form of a database with its application layer. Many of the repositories
created for these purposes are little better than public commons where
copies of unstructured data are placed for consumption, updating, using,
distributing, or storing by others. Share drives and the repositories of
document and content management systems are less navigable than the wild
West, resembling jungles after only a few years. The reason is quite simple,
unstructured data is not treated like data. Yet for all structured data can
do for us by enabling transactions and helping us understand what just
happened to our money, it represents facts, givens, about our world-facts
that we manipulate to create knowledge and understanding. The core of
unstructured data are documents that create, reinforce, maintain, and tear
apart relationships between human beings. Even the tiniest transaction is
memorialized-at least in the United States-by a document: a receipt.
