Wow, that seems exorbitant! I too would encourage you to get another bid. We recently sent a semi-truck full of records to our local WTE plant for incineration at a cost of less than $7K (truck, shipping/labor and disposal). We sent another truck load to our contracted shred vendor for another $5K. Granted none of them were wet, but it would not have mattered because both facilities would have taken the paper in any condition.

To give you an idea of costs, our shred vendor charges $1.40 per minute to shred on-site. They charge .05/pound for off-site shredding with a minimum charge of $15. Number of bins does not matter; bins are needed only to load to an on-site shred truck. We have spent many boxes of records to off-site shredding and have had no problems.

Subject: Damp Document Destruction

Good morning Listserv colleagues; over the weekend one of our operations in Texas was flooded (burst water pipe). Approximately 35 boxes of PHI documents were damaged. The RIM Department was made aware on Tuesday. Employees at the flooded facility dumped the majority of the records in document shred bins (65g). A decision has been made and approved by the appropriate parties to destroy the records - we will not be freeze-drying them based on several factors.

However, we have been advised that the documents have to be incinerated. I was informed that it will cost in excess of $100k to incinerate what equates to six 65g shred bins. I would appreciate any feedback regarding experiences you have had with matters like this.

Thanks
