In addition to writing at his own blog, AOTUS David S. Ferriero occasionally posts at the Organization of American Historians (OAH) website at Process: A blog for American History. His OAH Process post today looks at veterans records services at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.processhistory.org_ferriero-2Dveterans-2Dservices-2Dat-2Dnara_&d=DwIBaQ&c=pZJPUDQ3SB9JplYbifm4nt2lEVG5pWx2KikqINpWlZM&r=b5NZPQUb9_r2rQ3Zd74ATT3aSs9yKyRnJLOhqJvd7fE&m=H0ka5CMPqbcHmWZAtT5FJTVnxaFcQosgMnNTrchwhls&s=D7kmxoKPibIzaSj2hs8Modjle3-oKHqqABPJhF6clwM&e= or shortened link https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__bit.ly_2FA5Oul&d=DwIBaQ&c=pZJPUDQ3SB9JplYbifm4nt2lEVG5pWx2KikqINpWlZM&r=b5NZPQUb9_r2rQ3Zd74ATT3aSs9yKyRnJLOhqJvd7fE&m=H0ka5CMPqbcHmWZAtT5FJTVnxaFcQosgMnNTrchwhls&s=rdRUkM1sUoA8xZ3wm6_6k7WWpz3kSTFwVO7vQ9veTvE&e= In my work with the public on assignment at NARA, I answer a wide array of questions. For example, during my recent staffing assignment in the National Archives Museum for a special display of the Emancipation Proclamation, I answered visitors' questions about a wide array of records and archives related initiatives. Some visitors specifically asked about our "Remembering Vietnam" exhibit, which features a panel display about the use of veterans records for overdue recognition. Those of you who know and have worked with Ron Layel will recognize the take on RM in that context in my latest blog post about outreach and mission focus, "Doors and pathways." https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__archivalexplorations.wordpress.com_2018_02_23_doors-2Dand-2Dpathways_&d=DwIBaQ&c=pZJPUDQ3SB9JplYbifm4nt2lEVG5pWx2KikqINpWlZM&r=b5NZPQUb9_r2rQ3Zd74ATT3aSs9yKyRnJLOhqJvd7fE&m=H0ka5CMPqbcHmWZAtT5FJTVnxaFcQosgMnNTrchwhls&s=BJH7qRnLR8UHsSx0-04Hx2OefjV_K5GQ9a1bIj9gsXQ&e= or shortened link https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__bit.ly_2EV1usx&d=DwIBaQ&c=pZJPUDQ3SB9JplYbifm4nt2lEVG5pWx2KikqINpWlZM&r=b5NZPQUb9_r2rQ3Zd74ATT3aSs9yKyRnJLOhqJvd7fE&m=H0ka5CMPqbcHmWZAtT5FJTVnxaFcQosgMnNTrchwhls&s=KhKsqraW7yH7fCgpQRtvCH3nWhXZ95v9nHRyOZA6Dw0&e= NARA has a robust online presence and a thoughtful approach to using the web and social sharing platforms to reach people where they gather. If you're interested in metadata, the National Archives' Flickr presence reflects a great deal of technical information about photos, as you can see if you click "show EXIF" here: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.flickr.com_photos_archivesnews_24507394473_in_album-2D72157664285932260_&d=DwIBaQ&c=pZJPUDQ3SB9JplYbifm4nt2lEVG5pWx2KikqINpWlZM&r=b5NZPQUb9_r2rQ3Zd74ATT3aSs9yKyRnJLOhqJvd7fE&m=H0ka5CMPqbcHmWZAtT5FJTVnxaFcQosgMnNTrchwhls&s=7wfzKuGfb7_UlxigP_SfLPw4GnbCn08sIIU24gOLtok&e= or shortened link https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__bit.ly_2Fyk7Qd&d=DwIBaQ&c=pZJPUDQ3SB9JplYbifm4nt2lEVG5pWx2KikqINpWlZM&r=b5NZPQUb9_r2rQ3Zd74ATT3aSs9yKyRnJLOhqJvd7fE&m=H0ka5CMPqbcHmWZAtT5FJTVnxaFcQosgMnNTrchwhls&s=-la_7IrHTV0tDJwfi0f3FBvknYQjWGG0X85ysdPKe6A&e= In this case, the Archivist himself chose to share what happened. Since I used this photo in my last blog post about executive leadership and not taking yourself too seriously despite handling challenging obligations, here's the story. As David Ferriero tried to cross Pennsylvania Avenue in September 2015 to get a better view of Pope Francis, whose motorcade soon would pass westbound in front of the National Archives, a policeman in the temporary security zone in the cleared street yelled at him (agency head or no agency head!) to get back on the curb. As he did so, he laughed, as did his assistant, Maureen McDonald, as well as a number of NARA employees and guards standing in front of the National Archives! As you deal with retention scheduling and disposition of corporate photographs, if your organization isn't too buttoned down and image controlling to allow it, it's worth remembering as "an agent for the future" the value of candid pictures and anecdotes in preserving images that reflect some of the human side of our workplaces!
