BROOKFIELD — When town officials posted thousands of municipal records
online years ago, they thought they were making it easier for the public to
access useful and important information.

But the belated realization that thousands of older mortgages, tax liens
and other documents contain residents’ Social Security numbers — making
them potential targets of identity thieves — forced officials to take the
records down while they figure out how to redact such sensitive data.
