(snip)"Osterman Research states that in 2003, 90% of enterprises were using
IM to some extent. A survey conducted by Osterman in 2003 revealed that more
than 60% of participants cited AOL Instant Messenger as an IM tool workers
use; more than 50% cited MSN Messenger."

These figures didn't surprise me too much. However, what does surprise me
is the lack of policies, procedures and standards governing the retention
and disposition of records created using Instant Messaging. Other issues
that arise would be of a concern to me would be compliance with legislation,
compliance with corporate IM/IT standards, records preservation, ATIP,
duplication, security, unauthorized access, confidentiality, privacy, access
to records if and when required by organization, adherence to corporate IM
standards, information organized and captured in corporate records
repository in a useable accepted form, can others use the information etc.

As more and more of our work becomes decentralized IM/IT practitioners have
the need to work remotely using lap tops and blackberries as well. As a
result, much of the aforementioned would apply as well.

I do agree with Peter when he mentioned capturing the content. I preach
this daily that it is not the medium that dictates the retention, but rather
the content. How it is stored then comes into play after.

Friday humour: Thing not to say to a cop after being pulled over, "I only
had one officer Mr. Keg". I am out of my mind, but please feel free to
leave a message. Have a wonderful day folks.
