If you would be so kind, I have one final comment on the recent postings.
I have been working on many differing IM projects lately and also KM
projects. KM is "knowledge management". It is the leveraging of knowledge
embedded in the organization, either in its paper/electronic files,
processes or in its people. It is also about storage, retrieval as well as
the understanding of information that will become knowledge.
In the KM world Listservs have been described by many in the industry as
informal databases of "structured intellectual capital". Listservs have
also been called "virtual classrooms" for online learning. A listserv could
also be described as a virtual group of people getting together,
collaborating, sharing and learning from one another. It is a community of
practice (CoP). Learning from others who are willing to share their
knowledge, work and life experiences is what it is really all about. This
knowledge and wisdom is not only the successes, but also the failures. We
can learn from what hasn't worked as well too.
My point is that there is an intrinsic value to this "Records Management"
listserv. The value is contained within the sum of its parts. The parts
being us, the people. Using Peter as an example, forgive me Peter, he
brings measurable and demonstrated value to this listserv. He is a
contributor, educator and I am sure a mentor to many. I don't know Peter
except from this listserv, but isn't this virtual community wonderful, as we
come from industries across the globe for one thing and one thing only, to
share and learn from one another. That is the true value of this community.
I love what the majority of people bring to this listserv. It is
enlightening, educational and a shining example of who we are as
professionals. Pat yourselves on the back folks. Thank you for listening
