Lucinda,

Checking into your scanner's and your scanning software's capacity is
always good idea and a great place to start. Contact your vendor(s) and
ask questions.

As pointed out by Janet Evans, Kofax VRS is an additional software
package which is commercially available from Kofax via your local
re-seller. It can be bundled with a wide range of scanners and software.
However it may require some hardware changes (Adapter card and cable.)
It may also impact the scanning speed of your scanning station, as the
software can be a processor hog.

Another suggestion may be the scanner itself. There are several scanner
manufacturers which bundle scanning software with their products which
will also provide excellent image clean up out of the box.

Making copies of the original for scanning can work, but it can also
detract from the quality of the scanned image.

There is also the option of identifying the documents of poorer quality
and finding a good conversion services bureau that comes highly
recommended and getting a proposal on what they would charge you to
convert the documents into the file format and medium of your choice.

Cheers,

Thanks Janet. I'll see what kind of features our software has.

What kind of scanning software are you using?

Some software like Kofax Virtual Rescan allows you to improve the image
quality and it removes the background noise (like paper discoloration).

Subject: "Unscanable" Documents

Hello,

We're in the process of scanning ordinances dating back to 1917 into our
document imaging system. We've gotten as far back as the 1920's but due
to the browning of the paper used way back then, our scanned images are
too faint to read. The "trying to make a darker reproduction on the
copy machine" trick hasn't worked either. Does anyone have a suggestion
how we can get this document into electronic format? We could just
retype the document for scanning purposes, but, since Ordinances are
legal papers, we wondered how we would certify that the re-typed
document was an official copy (if we can do that at all.)

Thanks in advance for all your suggestions!

~L
