Hi Emma,

I'm the one teaching many of the courses you list, and of course I am
biased. :)

That said, I can at least answer the question about the AIIM ERM Courses.
AIIM hired Cornwell Management Consultants, co-writers of the MoReq standard
in the EU, and Oxford Learning Group to produce the ERM Certificate Program.
The program consists of three main parts:
- ERM Practitioner: The basics of RM and ERM, including a detailed
introduction to the electronic records lifecycle. This is available online
as 17 prerecorded modules, or onsite as a 2-day course. Upon completion of
the courses and passing the exam, the student receives the ERM Practitioner
designation.
- ERM Specialist: This builds on the ERMP and details the steps to
successfully implement an ERM program, including people, processes, and
technologies. It is based in large part on MoReq and ISO 15489. It is also
available online as 12 prerecorded modules or onsite as a 2-day course. Upon
completion of the courses and passing the exam, the student receives the ERM
Specialist designation.
- ERM Master Class: This 4- or 5-day workshop includes the ERMP and ERMS as
well as a detailed case study that provides an opportunity to apply the
information covered previously. It is ONLY available as an onsite course.
Upon completion of the class, passing the exam, and completing a home case
study, the student receives the ERM Master designation.

Note that I have also posted about some other courses I am teaching,
including courses on email management and advanced records management. These
courses are NOT related to the AIIM courses and are based on my experience,
dozens of industry standards and best practices, and two books I am writing
that will be released in Q1 2007. They will be part of a new certificate
program I am designing that will also be released in Q1 2007.

The CDIA+ is not as technical as you may have heard, but it does cover quite
a bit of imaging and supporting technologies. Since 2002 it has also covered
a lot of project management, process analysis, communications, change
management, and implementation planning.

If you have any additional questions on these courses or even other
competitive courses, please let me know. I know that a number of people have
attended the courses and have posted reviews about them to the chapter
newsletters. Perhaps some of them will be willing to share their thoughts
offlist?

Regards,

Jesse Wilkins

Subject: Introduction (and question about classes?)

I'm Emma Shadow and I'm relatively new to Records Management.

I've been working for a service bureau doing scanning for about 6 months and
prior to that, I was a records clerk at a local not-for-profit Law Firm
doing work for the disadvantaged in a largely Hispanic community.

I've been lurking on the Listserve for a few months and was interested in
some of the recent posts about RM Degrees and certificate programs,
especially those being offered online. I have an Associates degree, and was
thinking about obtaining some further, more specific, education. I also
noticed some courses being offered by an individual on a number of subjects.

Some of these are referred to as "ERM courses" and they are somehow
associated with AIIM, which confused me. I've been to a couple of ARMA
Chapter meetings and one AIIM chapter meeting also. I thought ARMA was where
most records management education was being offered. I've visited AIIM's
web site and see they offer things like CDIA training, but this doesn't look
like it's really records management to me, it's more hardware and
applications training.

I've searched the Listserve archives and I see these individual courses have
been offered off and on and noticed that people have asked if anyone has
taken any of them, but didn't see any responses that said anyone has? The
only response I saw was from someone who is teaching the courses, and he
said they were good (grin) which didn't surprise me.

Does anyone have any input on the courses?

Thank you!

Emma
