In the last 5 years, I have had the opportunity to provide RM consulting
across numerous industries to include Government, State, Manufacturing,
Gaming, etc.

5 years ago, it was very rare that I have seen legal department
involvement in the process of establishing or reviewing records
retention schedules.

That seemed to always fall on the corporation's facilities department.
In fact, RM seemed to just be nothing more then an additional duty for
most.

In our electronic world today I have seem some drastic changes as far as
strategy or alignment of a records management department. Now I'm
seeing the role of records management either belonging to the legal
department or in some cases the IT department.

Of course these big changes usually only occur after a serious
litigation within an organization happens and the legal department
finally realizes they have discovery problems.

Eventually, it's like going to McDonalds to get a hot cup of coffee and
they make you sign a waiver.

Subject: Determination of Retention Periods

Good morning from sunny/warm Phoenix - I want to get a feel from the
membership as to whom in your organization is/was responsible for
establishing, reviewing and approving records retention periods. The
answer may/should be obvious, but I have had some discussions recently
regarding a lack of Legal Department involvement in this process. If
you are willing to share this information, I would like to know the
stance and level of involvement/responsibility your Legal Department
takes in this matter.

Thanks
