FYI. I think this is an interesting approach in that the association has
decided to make continuing education mandatory as a condition of continued
membership.

For those of you not as familiar with RMAA, their membership has a tiered
structure and experiential and educational requirements to become a
(professional) Member or Fellow. Because of this, members of RMAA also
typically indicate their membership status as a credential, e.g. Bob Smith
ARMA, MRMA, or FRMA.

What do YOU think?

Records Management Association of Australasia (RMAA) Press Release 1 October
2006

Compulsory CPD for Professional Members

The Records Management Association of Australasia (RMAA) at its September
2006 Board meeting passed a plan to strengthen its existing continuing
professional development (CPD) scheme for records and information
professionals and introduce compulsory CPD for all professional members of
the Association.

These plans are a first step towards a 'validation system', which the RMAA
intends to deliver and which will require all records and information
professional members to show on a regular basis that they remain current in
the dynamic field of records and information management.

The new compulsory CPD-system has been implemented by the RMAA and takes
effect from 1 July 2007. The CPD activities are organised by the RMAA itself
or other recognised service providers (professional and other allied
institutions, government agencies, commercial course providers, etc.).
Although there are many ways of taking CPD activities, the RMAA encourages
more active learning methods such as participating, presenting,
contributing, writing and studying instead of passive learning as are
reading and listening, The existing categories include:

A. Externally arranged CPD activities;
B. Professional activities / contribution; C. On-the-job development; and D.
Personal Enhancement and others.

A mandatory CPD Program is a global trend amongst professional practice.
RMAA's Board and CPD Committee looks forward to our members' unfailing
support in the years to come.

The CPD Scheme is available from the website - www.rmaa.com.au - or from
Kate Walker, Chief Executive Officer - [log in to unmask]

Notes to Release:

.	Professional Members of the RMAA have the status of Associate,
Member or
Fellow.

.	Professional members are required to accumulate 90 points of CPD
over a
three-year period to retain a Professional Member status.

.	Verifiable CPD is defined as CPD which:

.	has concise educational aims and objectives - the activity should
have a
clear purpose or goal;
.	clear anticipated outcomes - the participant should know what (s)he
can
expect to gain as a result of taking part in the activity;
.	quality controls - participants should have the chance to give
feedback,
with a view to improving quality; and
.	for which the participant gets and keeps a certificate (or other
type of
documentary proof) proving that they took part in the activity. The
certificate should come from the activity provider or organiser, and should
show the number of hours spent on the activity.

.	Ongoing support for members and tools to assist with the CPD scheme
are
available - contact Kate Walker - [log in to unmask]
