Keep it short and sweet. I'd say "I'm resposible for getting the right records/information, to the right person, at the right time, in the right context, and doing that better, faster, cheaper." That usually gets things started.

Subject: [RM] Records Management Elevator Speech

I was recently asked by a young upstart exactly what I do for a living
in Records Management as I launched into the usual rhetoric he asked
very politely "Can I get the short version." My response was as
follows

The centrally managed records management program that I am privileged to
oversee does the following

We

1. Assist individuals at all levels in making sense of Records
Management expectations imposed by regulatory agencies, customers, legal
and tax requirements.

2. Determines with others what industry best practices will
best help meet the expectations and requirements for compliance,
efficiencies, and cost containment.

3. Is focused and vigilant on helping others improve
efficiency that contribute to substantial overhead cost reductions for
creating, receiving, managing, using and disposing of company records.

His response Oh sounds boring.

I wished him well in his future and did my best to contain my self. Then
I said look son (did I ever feel old) their use to be a commercial for
Fram Oil Filters that made a great point Fram Oil Filters "pay now or
pay later."

All the best
