Bill, I am currently working on a project to significantly reduce the
number of record class codes (primary classifications) available to our
users. However, in some cases it is a trade-off in the fact that the
reduction of primary classification codes has resulted in the increase
of secondary classification codes.

However, I feel that the reduction of primary classification codes does
in fact expedites the record declaration process. For example rather
than having five unique classifications for contracts, one now exist
with two secondary classification codes. The caveat associated with our
system application is that if for some reason each of the five contracts
types had five different and valid retention periods, then I would still
be stuck with five unique primary classifications.

For one of our subsidiary units we reduced the number of record class
codes (primary classification codes) from 590 to 262. Users have
expressed that the declaration process now is not as overwhelming. Hope
this helps.

Is there a trend to reduce the number of subject catogories that are
available to users when declaring records?
