A quote from one surprised IM customer said "...he said. "We've even got
backup tapes that weren't ours before."To mitigate any further risk, the
company is investigating encrypting all tapes that go off site."

But this is another case of Why is it a customer should feel the need to do
this, when they signed a contract with a vendor to provide a service?  If
materials are entrusted to a vendor you have a contractual agreement for
services with, why should you have to take a secondary step to make
provisions to protect yourself?

It's true there is a value to encryption of data in some instances, but it
should NOT be required in all instances, simply because the vendor isn't
able to fulfill their obligations to provide service.
