I have in the past found boxes that fit binders (slightly taller and
slightly wider than a standard box). Not recommended for many of the
reasons already mentioned by others in this thread. The thing not
mentioned yet, however, is that if you decide to use a non-standard size
records box, be sure to check out your offsite storage contract BEFORE
sending records offsite. If not, you might get a nasty surprise when
your bill comes. It has been known for a vendor to charge DOUBLE the
rate for a standard box, even though the box is only slightly bigger.
The reasoning is that if the shelves are configured exactly for a
standard box, a non-standard may take up the space of two boxes!
